HISTORY:

This Anglican parish church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. The church is an ancient structure (prior to 1245). There is an old tower, separated from the church by several yards. Most of the church was rebuilt during 1860-62, and the interior of the church was restored again in 1911. The Rectory was built in red brick and designed by Benjamin Ferrey.

This Church is unusual as the tower with spire is detached from the nave by 15 feet.

Tradition holds the monks of Castle Acre in Norfolk built Fleet Church.

The church was a gift to the Cluniac priory by Fulk of Fleet and confirmed by his son Joscelin/Joce who settled his affairs before setting off for Jerusalem in the 12th century. About 1160 Joce’s son, Richard tried unsuccessfully to claim his inheritance. Little remains of the original building. Despite eighteenth century renovation Brandon found ruins in the eighteenth century; Victorian rebuilding attracted Pevsner’s scorn.
