It’s a bit of a surprise to discover that somebody has actually read my book! The date of the photo is 27 May 1961, by which time the M&GN had been closed to passenger trains, although still open for goods. The train is an enthusiasts special and is approaching Winsover Road crossing; judging by the elevation of the shot, the photo was probably taken from the long footbridge at the end of Green Lane.

Have seen this picture on several occasions and always wondered how this train could be from Sutton Bridge when it is traversing the March To Spalding line metals. Trains from Sutton Bridge would have crossed the M&GN bridge further down the river Welland before this was removed. Trains from here would have travelled on to a rising embankment through the Spalding Rugby club ground before taking a right hand curve for Spalding station or a left which continued across a bridge over the March to Spalding line. (just out of shot) The embankment in the distance carried trains to Hawthorn crossing and on to Cuckoo junction yard.
I can only assume that this train is an enthusiasts special from Peterborough via the March to Spalding line as the M&GN lines at this time were impassable.
