Comment from Sam

I was speaking to my Grandad today. He knew it as the pub on New Fen Dike (I think, could have been on Old Fen Dike) as they lived in the house that was built behind it called “The Gate”. “The Gate” is still there today but surrounded by conifers so you can’t actually see the house. Grandad used to farm on the field behind, lots of good memories at that house.

Hope this helps a bit,

Sam

  1. Hello Geoff
    Some interesting images here!
Where was the Gate Hangs High, please? I saw the photo and sign at Elgoods the other day.
    Thanks

  2. Just in parish of Sutton St James, travel north along Lutton gate Road, Sutton St Edmund, at t junction turn left, about 200 yards on the right just before reaching bridge over drain

  3. Hello,

Very late to the conversation here but my grandad was asking about this pub and after finding loads of information about another one in Oxfordshire, we wanted to know more about the one he and his grandad used fish opposite.

After following directions from his house 60+ years ago in the newer google maps technology, we got to the same area as Margaret Courtman said, which he was very happy about being able to remember after all these years!

He wonders if the bridge was ever there as he doesn’t remember the bridge or remembers a different layout to what we can see now?

Very interesting about the name, if there is anymore information please share!

    Thanks
    Thomas and David Fensom
