What a lovely photograph!! Now then, Geoff, please may I ask if you could write a post to appeal for a photograph of another Chequers – the beerhouse in Tongue End. This would be a superb boost to my family tree research! The last landlord was Edward Goodman, and It closed as a pub in 1934. Then sold by the brewery (Mowbray of Grantham) to Charles Freestone, but subsequently demolished a short time after.
On the 1891 and 1901 censuses, James Canham was the publican here. His wife, Sarah Retchless, is 2nd cousin 3x removed to my husband. Lovely to see the photo, thanks.
