Memories of Gedney Drove End

Robert Newberry remembers

When my Mum and Dad lived in Gedney Drove End in the late 1980’s, early 1990’s, I can remember there were two shops in the village (possibly three?). This one in Marsh Road my mother and father used to refer to as Marks and Spencers! I seem to recall the shop did close down about this time?

Would I be right in thinking the store room with the curve3d roof is an old Nissan Hut?

Hi Everyone.

Best to everyone.

What a family to work for, I was 11 or 12 when I started on a Saturday just doing the paper round from the shop to pit lane, then through the village.

Collecting the money, what a responsibility to have at 12 years old.

I worked through the school holidays helped in the shop picking the orders for customers, filling the shelves etc, what a great footing I had from such lovely people for the rest of my working life.

Yes I remember when I lived in GDE there was 3 shops that was in the mid 60’s, Davey’s One in Pit Lane which was run by Mr Stebbings and then Cross Bros general store which is where I lived,my dad was manager, Jack Scrimshaw.

Joyce Fines Dad closed the shop in April 1999. Mum and dad then had it knocked down and a bungalow built on the land
