The village derived its name from this inn, which was said to have been over 400 years old. There is a story that a scull (a Saracen’s Head) was brought back as a trophy from a medieval crusade and that this is the origin of the name because the scull was kept as a memento in the pub.
The inn was demolished in 1961.
Jane Hunt commented This really interests me because my mother was born at Saracens head in 1928 at Teddington Manor on the old road round the corner from the pit so am really interested if there’s any more info about it.
Rachel Iddenden-Rhodes My great grandparents were the Reids who kept the pub, in fact my great grandmother (i think her name was Maud) was a force to be reckoned with, she kept the pub while her husband was away at war all on her own with 2 small children!
Shawn Graveling My great grandfather was the cobbler at Saracens head in the Victorian era
Angela Sedgwick My mother in law was born in saracens head in 1918 in Greenfield cottages, we have tried to find these but can’t so presume the place doesn’t exist anymore, we have a couple of pics of Saracens Head school taken when she was a child. Her name was Connie Hunt, siblings were Fanny, Mabel and Joe
Gary Slator My family were the blacksmiths in Saracens head from the early 1700s until around 1935, they also ran the other pub the new inn from the war until approx 1980.
