Can you help with stories of subterranean Spalding?

Years ago John Pett – the barber – told me that he had been in the cellar of Boots (now Beales) and seen arches or vaulting. I’m not sure whether this was medieval or not and would have been associated with the “tower” that was down the Hole In The Wall passage.
Bearing in mind the buildings on that side of Market place were razed in the “Great Fire” of 1715, the cellars from earlier buildings would have been re-used.
I’m not sure whether these still exist, bearing in mind the alterations the building has had over the past thirty years, or whether the owners would be amenable to letting someone look, but I think it would be worthy of investigation.
